My parents are visiting and we decided to go on a weekend break with them last month. A friend recommended beautiful Yercaud. And what a lovely tranquil hill station it is! Less crowded than Ooty or Kodaikanal but just as beautiful.

Yercaud is 227 kms south east of Bangalore and lies in the Shevaroy hills. The drive from Bangalore takes about 5 hours. Salem is the nearest town when you travel from Bangalore. From Salem begins the 31 km uphill drive to Yercuad. It takes about an hour to negotiate the 20 hairpin bends.

We were welcomed by the beautiful fragrance of Citriodora trees as we started our journey uphill.  This set the tone for a great weekend. I almost burst into a song. But better sense prevailed and I just hummed a tune to myself. There are quite a few tourist attractions in Yercaud but we chose to relax and admire the hills. The hotel where we stayed had an amazing view of the valley. We also had some visitors now and then. Managed to capture one of them.

We were told about this perfumery factory where natural oils are extracted to make many products. Called The Yercaud Perfumery Factory, it is owned by Mr. Ramesh Singh. We visted his place and bought some of their products (have used them already and very pleased). These have a good medicinal value and are apparently always in demand. These days whenever there is a natural alternative to any product I use, I choose natural.

Mr. Ramesh Singh is actually the descendant of a freedom fighter. His father Mr. Jaggu Singh, running 83, manages a vast farm full of exotic herbs and flowers. We had the good fortune of being taken on a guided tour of the farm by him, throughout being regaled by stories of yore. The end of the path provides a wonderful view of the valley. If you visit Yercaud do visit this humble man's farm. His passion for herbs is heartwarming. The address is :

Yercaud Perfumery Factory
Meera Nivas, Near Sri Gnanananda Ashram,
Temple Road,
Yercaud - 636602
Ph - 04281-222360, 222630

It was a short and sweet stay and I felt very sad to leave Yercaud but as they say, good things in life always come in small packets. Am sure I will go back some day...
